Green Party Announce Gender Balance for London General Election Candidates
3 April 2015
The Green Party has announced that they have selected 36 women and 37 men to contest the full set of London constituencies.
The news came after a concerted effort to ensure gender balance amongst candidates, with measures being taken to encourage women to stand. These measures, successfully secured by Green Party Women, included ensuring that at least one woman contested every constituency selection.
Sarah Cope, Chair of Green Party Women, said “With each local party having autonomy, it is not within the Green Party’s scope to impose ‘top down’ rulings as to how local members should select their local candidates. However, with men outnumbering women 4 to 1 in Westminster, we took small steps to ensure that women would be equally able to stand as General Election candidates for the Green Party.”
